Campus News 11.24.2017

Happy Thanksgiving!

I hope that this week has been full of fun, food, family & friends!

I have enjoyed a lot of rest, some shopping, football, time with family and some personal professional learning! It has been a great week!

BIG, BIG Exciting News!! After an extensive search, we are excited to welcome our new assistant principal to Patsy Sommer Elementary! Carlos Molina has been an educator in RRISD for 12 years with extensive experience in supporting students at all levels from varying backgrounds. Carlos most recently served as the inclusion teacher at Robertson Elementary and is passionate about providing instruction that meets the varying needs of our students. A systems thinker, we are looking for the expertise and leadership, he will bring to our campus!

News from the Nurse:
It is flu and allergy season…

Over the past few weeks, we have had many students come to school and then go straight to the office because they are “sick”. If your child has fever above 100 degrees or has thrown up at home, please keep him at home. District policy states that a child should be fever free and not have incidents of vomiting or diarrhea for 24 hours before returning to school. Although we are also extremely sympathetic to students who suffer from allergies, we are not able to keep students inside during recess or PE when counts are high. If your child has a severe case of allergies, please contact a campus administrator in order to discuss options before requesting an exception.

Reflections:
Our open judging night on November 8 was a huge success! With the enormous number of awesome entries in our school, the judges were having a hard time. Out of 200 entries, 48 have been selected to move to the council level! We will celebrate these students on December 8 at 6:15. In addition to the awards ceremony, there will be an arts display where you can see almost all the beautiful creative works of our own Sommer Stallions. Parents, you will receive a separate email if your child is receiving an award, but everyone is encouraged to attend to enjoy most of the students’ work!

Science Fair:
It’s that time of the year again! Science Fair is right around the corner. Join us in the library for Science Research Night on Thursday, December 7th from 5:30-6:30. We will have books, rubrics and some science project examples displayed to help your child get in their scientific mindset. All grade levels may participate, however, only grades 3-5 will be judged and may progress to regionals. Science fair projects will be due Friday, January 19 no later than 7:45 am. Judging will take place on Monday, January 22. Students will take projects to their classroom.

Winter Holiday Parties:
Can you believe that the winter break will be here in just 4 short weeks?? This actually signals the date of the end of the 1st semester & midpoint of our school year! Please encourage your students to keep learning! They are our future leaders!

Winter parties will be held on Dec. 19 and Dec. 20. The schedule is shown below. Please remember that the purpose of the party is for our students to celebrate together as a class. We welcome your help and participation in creating a fun environment that is entered around our kids!

The parties are staggered in order to avoid traffic and parking issues. We truly appreciate your support!

Winter Party Schedule

Congratulations & Celebrations!
Our third grade visited the Round Rock Serving Center before the break. It was a wonderful learning experience for them and set the purpose for the care and success of their gardens. On her visit, Mrs. Caldwell delivered a check for over $3000 raised by last year’s third graders from collections and their Economics Fair! Kudos to this class and the teachers! This is the definition of One Family! and a great way to “Inspire World Class Leaders & Life-Long Learners!”
Congratulations to Lark Powell! She earned first place in the “Two-handed Dance” at an Irish dance competition in Houston before the break. Way to go Lark!
